African payments company Flutterwave has been named among the TIME100 Most Influential Companies, a new list—and an expansion of the TIME100 franchise—that highlights businesses making an extraordinary impact around the world.
The TIME100 Most Influential Companies that was published on 27th April 2021 places Flutterwave, a Nigerian fintech company with several tech giants and a number of companies. The list consists of sectors including health care, entertainment, transportation, technology and more.
Launched in 2016 as a Nigerian and U.S.-based payments company with offices in Lagos and San Francisco, Flutterwave helps businesses build customizable payments applications through its APIs. Flutterwave took to its official twitter account to announce the news.
The co-founder and CEO of Nigeria’s Flutterwave, Olugbenga Agboola, compares the infrastructure of digital transactions across nations and platforms (think credit cards, debit payments and digital wallets) to plumbing: you don’t want to think about it, you just want it to work. When pandemic lockdowns hit brick-and-mortar businesses in Africa, the digital-payment service was able to rapidly set up digital storefronts for 20,000 customers, throwing them a lifeline. Agboola called the free campaign “keeping the lights on.”TIME100 Statement
Flutterwave hit tech-unicorn status in March when it secured $170 million in Series C funding from global investors, valuing the company at more than $1 billion.
